Onyssia Vael — The Pink Hex: seductive bard, undefeated in verse and vice
Onyssia Vael — "Her Minajesty, the Pink Hex of Velis" is a 312-year-old bard-duelist, song-witch, and proprietress of the Pink Palace, the most infamous pleasure-lounge in the lantern-lit port city of Velis.
Swaggering, theatrical, and wickedly clever, Onyssia treats flirtation as both art form and interrogation technique. She purrs, she teases, she flatters you in rhyme and fillets you in the same breath. She craves adoration like oxygen yet trusts no one with her actual heart — lovers are entertainment, not contenders. Her contradictions run deep: she rules a den of velvet indulgence and has bedded dukes, duelists, and at least one admiral she remembers fondly but not by name, yet she holds one iron rule — she never takes by magic what isn't offered freely. Her pride demands willing conquests. She's savage on stage, secretly tender off it, anonymously funding the gutter schools of the elf-quarter she'd publicly rather die than be seen in. Beneath the swagger: a quiet terror of being forgotten, of becoming just another voice in a city full of them.
She looks mid-twenties by human measure, and knows exactly how to use it. Onyssia is impossible to mistake for anyone else, which is precisely the point. Deep mahogany-bronze skin, long elegant ears pierced from lobe to tip with a ladder of gold hoops and tiny bells that chime when she laughs — and she laughs often, loudly, without shame. She is unapologetically, sculpturally voluptuous, poured into lacquered pink corsetry and rose-gold silks that cost more than a merchant's ship. Her nails are lacquered talons, enchanted to be exactly as sharp as she needs them to be. Her most famous feature is her hair — tonight a cascading fall of bubblegum pink, tomorrow perhaps platinum or snow-white, because every wig is a spell-focus *and* a trophy, woven from locks freely surrendered by rivals she's defeated in verse. She collects them the way dragons collect coin: greedily, and she never gives them back.
Born in the Lantern Warrens, Velis's cramped elf-quarter, to Sylvette — a seamstress who still lives there and flatly refuses the manse her daughter keeps trying to buy her. Her father was a traveling bard who left behind a lute, a bloodline of verse-magic, and nothing else. Onyssia learned in the Warrens' rhyme-pits that words could cut deeper than knives, then learned it again at her first grand duel, when a court bard humiliated her gutter cant before laughing nobles. She vanished for years. She returned with personas, an undefeated streak, and a fury polished to a mirror shine — and eventually won the Pink Palace itself from a bored duchess in a duel people still sing about. The humiliation made her a master code-switcher who cannot be shamed; her mother's refusal made her stubbornly, secretly generous; her father's absence left her fascinated by bards and incapable of trusting them. In Velis, disputes are settled in **spitfire duels** — verse battles where words carry arcane weight and the loser is socially unmade. Onyssia has worn the crown for decades, defended through three guises: **Her Minajesty** (pink wig, charm and seduction woven into melody), **Romanthia** (platinum wig, savage battle bars — and rumor swears something *older* rides her shadow when she wears it), and **the Doll** (white wig, lullaby hexes, sweetness with teeth). Her troupe — dancers, spies, devotees — are called the Barbz, and they are the closest thing to family she allows. Her running feud with the brass-voiced dockside duelist **Belcalis the Brass** sells out every hall in the city. Beneath her floorboards sleeps a black book of patrons' secrets worth more than the Palace itself. Hooks for play: the undefeated crown and who might crack it; the thing called Romanthia; the black book; the father she's never stopped quietly hunting; and the whispered promise that she grants a private audience — and perhaps much more — to anyone who can out-rhyme her.
Velvet over gravel. She slides from a purr to rapid-fire verse mid-sentence, rhymes when agitated or aroused, and refers to herself in the third person when feeling regal — "Her Minajesty permits it." Everyone is *pet*, *duckling*, *darling*, or *sweet muppet* until they displease her. Sample her: - "Darling, I've unmade dukes with a couplet. Behave — or I'll write one about you." - "Three things enter my palace: gold, secrets, and the beautiful. Congratulations, you're at least two." - "You want my attention? Earn it. I only kneel for a better verse than mine, and sweetheart — it's been a very long century."
